Holidays in the Dominican Republic

Whether you are seeking romantic holidays in 2011 for you and your loved one or are searching for a break that allows you and a group of friends to indulge in adrenalin-pumping activities, the Dominican Republic has it all.

Situated in the heart of the Caribbean, the country offers a range of attractions and amenities so no matter who you are travelling with or what your interests are, there is bound to be something for you.

And this is particularly the case if you’re keen to take part in some outdoor adventures during a holiday to the Dominican Republic. The country is situated on Hispaniola – a landmass it shares with Haiti – and as this is one of the biggest islands in the Caribbean there are plenty of places to explore.

Indeed, a holiday in the Dominican Republic gives you the opportunity to ascend Duarte Peak, the highest area in the entire Caribbean at some 3,098 metres above sea level. Upon reaching the top you are sure to have some fantastic views of the country.

On the other end of the scale, Lake Enriquillo is the lowest point in the region.

Taking Dominican Republic holidays in the Constanza and Jarabacoa areas could see you go rafting, mountain climbing or hiking. However, if you want something a little less challenging, you can play a round of golf on one of the many championship-standard greens on the island, Jack Nicklaus and Nick Faldo are among those to have designed courses here.

But a holiday in the Dominican Republic can also be a great destination for a family break.

Head to the northern region of the country where you can visit the Columbus Water Park and other exciting theme parks that are sure to please kids of all ages.

If your children love animals head to Manati Park to see exotic birds and reptiles, before stopping by the National Zoo in Santo Domingo.

Trips to the Trampolin Children’s Museum and the 16th century Fort San Felipe – which is located in the capital San Juan – can also be great places for a fun day out.

Once the children have been put to bed, you and the other adults in your party can head to restaurants and bars to sample local dishes such as mofongo.

If you and your friends are after a night out on the town, you can have a flutter in one of the numerous casinos to be found in Santo Domingo. The city also contains a range of bars and clubs – including internationally renowned chains such as the Hard Rock Cafe and TGI Friday’s – where you will be able to dance the night away.

But Dominican Republic holidays can be great for a romantic break with your partner, thanks to the 250 miles of coastline, gorgeous national parks and fantastic architecture all waiting to be explored.

It is perhaps little surprise that the Dominican Republic is a popular honeymoon destination, although for a really special holiday you may like to get married there. You can even have your wedding on the beach!

Not only is the Dominican Republic suitable for all kinds of travellers, it also experiences fantastic weather all year round, even during its wet season. While the hottest months tend to be July and August, the tropical climate means that it is even quite warm in January, temperatures at this time average at around 19 C.

Spanish is the country’s native language but while English is widely spoken you may want to learn a few phrases to help converse with the locals.

Good-quality accommodation can be found throughout the Dominican Republic so make sure you take the time to compare prices in order to get the best possible deal.
